Vic: Grocon workers set to vote on workplace agreement

MELBOURNE, Dec 18 AAP - More than 500 Grocon workers filed into the venue for today'ssecret ballot on a non-union enterprise agreement with the construction giant.

At the union sausage sizzle outside the venue, the workers were told to reject the agreement.

ACTU secretary Greg Combet told the workers accepting the offer would weaken theirposition in future rounds of enterprise bargaining.

Mr Combet and Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) Victorian secretaryMartin Kingham said a "no" vote was also crucial for the future pay and conditions ofthe 28,000 construction workers in the state, most of whom work under a union-endorsedenterprise agreement.

Grocon, Australia's largest private construction firm, has organised the ballot toby-pass the CFMEU.

Nearly 1000 sausages and 20 kilograms of bacon were consumed as union officials madetheir final pitch to the Grocon workers.

With union officials and media banned from the venue, three union-appointed scrutineerswere left to supervise the ballot.

The result of the ballot should be known by mid-afternoon.
