NSW: Govt bans sale of Ecstasy Cigarettes to minors

The New South Wales Government has bowed to pressure to ban the sale of herbal Ecstasy
Cigarettes to minors, following fears the product could encourage drug use.

The cigarettes, which have been freely available to children, are marketed with the slogan:
"It smells like POT. Looks like POT. Relaxes like POT".

Acting Health Minister PAUL WHELAN says the government will amend the Public Health Act to
make it illegal to sell any herbal cigarettes to people under 18.

He says the legislation will be introduced in the next session of Parliament.

He says the government is worried that if young people experiment with herbal cigarettes,
there could be a natural progression to harder and more harmful substances.

Mr WHELAN says that while herbal cigarettes do no not have the addictive nature of tobacco,
they contain tar and generate carbon monoxide.
