NSW: Nottingham in Newcastle after tow from Lord Howe
The Royal Navy has moved to allay fears that munitions aboard the crippled Britishwarship HMS Nottingham are unsafe after the ship's grounding at Lord Howe Island.
The destroyer is now safely in harbour at Newcastle after arriving yesterday under tow.
There have been concerns the munitions were destabilised when the Nottingham floodedafter it hit Wolf Rock off Lord Howe, on July 7.
But Commander TONY HOLBERRY, the officer in charge of the salvage project, says themunitions, including Sea Dart missiles, present no danger.
Two tugs spent three days towing the 3500-tonne destroyer to Newcastle, a month afterit ran aground.
Crowds lined the foreshore in Newcastle yesterday to watch the 3500-tonne vessel beinghauled backwards by tugs into the harbour.
The ship is expected to remain in Newcastle for about three weeks for the salvage operationand removal of munitions.
