FED: Thousands of jobs threatened by paper dumping AMWU
A production union says about 15,000 jobs in regional Australia are threatened by an
Indonesian company's bid to have trade restrictions lifted from its exports to Australia.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union says the Australian Customs Service is
considering the request by the Indonesian company to have the anti-dumping measures lifted.
They were first imposed on TJIWI KIAMIA, a subsidiary of Asia Pulp and Paper, in 1994.
A union spokesman says hundreds of Australian workers lost their jobs as a result of this
Indonesia company dumping its paper products in Australia before.
He says they've continued the practice in other countries since, and lifting the
restrictions would threaten jobs in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.
