HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 1997--Dedicated to providing the smoothest, most realistic video and audio available for the desktop, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today introduced the new hardware MPEG1 (a series of standards developed by the Motion Picture Experts Group) Decoder. This hardware-based MPEG accelerator provides 16-bit CD-quality stereo sound, as well as full-screen, full-motion digital video at 30 frames per second without dropping a single frame. The MPEG1 supports resolutions from 640 x 480 up to 1280 x 1024, all with 16.7 million colors; it is also MPC Level 3 compliant. The MPEG1's "plug and play" supports Windows 95 and includes the MPEG version of Compton's Encyclopedia.
The MPEG1 Decoder is targeted toward Internet users in business environments, web developers, multimedia authors, and users interested in performance hardware decoding.
